WASHINGTON - "No raise money, no get bonus," said Sen. Sam Brownback in questioning a witness Thursday about a reward that Democratic fund-raiser John Huang was to receive for bringing in money from Asian-Americans.
Brownback, R-Kan., said a moment later that he intended "no slight by my statement previously" - an apparent reference to his mimicking language.
The remarks came at the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee's hearings on fund-raising abuses.
Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Amy Weiss Tobe said Brownback's remark "was completely racist. He obviously realized what he said when he tried to back off from it."
Democrats, notably Sen. Daniel Akaka of Hawaii, have warned against allowing the hearings to be used to criticize Asian-American citizens who have given lawful contributions to the Democratic Party. Akaka's great-grandfather emigrated to Hawaii from China.
